World food prices continue downward trend for fifth consecutive month in January
Global food prices dropped for a fifth straight month in January as dairy and sugar costs fell. The UN also forecast record cereal production for the year.
Insights:
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported on Friday that its FAO food price index declined for the fifth month in a row during January. The index averaged 123.9 points for the month, which places it 22.7% lower than the record high reached in March 2022. This ongoing downward trend reflects shifting dynamics across several major commodity groups monitored by the organization.
According to the latest data, the January decrease was fueled by price drops in the dairy sector , the sugar sector , and the meat sector . These declines outweighed gains observed in other areas, as prices for the cereals sector and the vegetable oils sector both trended upward during the month.
