China consumer inflation cools in January while producer deflation persists

China’s consumer inflation slowed to 0.2 percent in January while producer prices continued to fall. The data increases pressure for more policy support.

China CNCN reported that its consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.2% year-on-year in January, while the producer price index (PPI) fell 1.4% year-on-year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). This latest data indicates that CPI growth has cooled and missed expectations, while the decline in the producer price index marks the extension of a years-long downturn. Dong Lijuan, representing the NBS, highlighted these trends as the persistence of PPI deflation continues to shape the economic landscape.
