Kenya Infrastructure Fund Deploys 2.6 Billion in Bonds
Kenya's new infrastructure fund has started deploying its 2.6 billion dollar seed capital by purchasing domestic government bonds. The strategy aims to free up bank liquidity for private lending while funding vital projects.
Kenya's new National Infrastructure Fund deployed 340 billion shillings ($2.62B) in seed capital by purchasing domestic government bonds. The initiative aims to finance critical infrastructure projects without adding strain to public finances, according to CEO James Mworia. The fund plans to invest its total capital by June 2027 to mobilize 3.6 trillion shillings over the next decade.
President William Ruto launched the fund in October 2025 to bypass traditional borrowing constraints. Annual debt repayments consume 40% of government revenue, limiting taxation scope and highlighting the country's severe infrastructure deficit.
