HDFC Life New Business Value Falls 8.4 Percent in Q4
HDFC Life reported an 8.4 percent drop in new business value for the March quarter. Net profit rose slightly to 4.96 billion rupees as renewals drove income.
HDFC LIFE INSURANCE CO LTD has reported a slowdown in its new business growth for the fourth quarter, even as the company achieved a modest rise in net profit supported by policy renewals. The results reflect a challenging environment for the insurance sector in India, where market volatility and shifting distribution dynamics have impacted sales. The insurer, which is a subsidiary of HDFC BANK LIMITED, posted a net profit of 4.96 billion rupees ($53.2 million) for the quarter ended March 31. This figure represents a slight increase from the 4.77 billion rupees earned during the corresponding period of the previous year. Net premium income grew by approximately 9% to 258.29 billion rupees, bolstered by a 14% rise in renewals. However, key performance indicators for new business showed signs of pressure. The annualized premium equivalent (APE) rose by only 1.3% to 52.54 billion rupees, a sharp decline from the 13% growth rate recorded in the preceding three months. Furthermore, the value of new business (VNB) dropped 8.4% to 12.61 billion rupees, largely due to the expiration of specific tax benefits. This led to a contraction in new business margins, which fell to 24.2% from 25.6% a year ago. While tax reforms introduced in September initially boosted retail demand, analysts pointed to weaker sales through banking channels and customer hesitation regarding market-linked products as factors for the slowdown. The performance contrasts with that of ICICI PRUDENTIAL LIFE INSURA, which recently reported a significant jump in quarterly profit following robust new business growth. Vibha Padalkar, Managing Director and CEO of HDFC Life, highlighted the strategic direction of the company in response to the current economic climate. > Looking ahead, we expect a gradual shift in the product mix as customers rebalance toward long-term savings and protection in an environment of greater uncertainty.
