HDFC Life Insurance posted a 1.4 percent rise in third-quarter profit as premium income grew following a GST cut. Higher expenses and margin erosion moderated gains.
Insights:
HDFC Life Insurance Company Limited reported a modest increase in third-quarter net profit of 1.4 percent to 4.21 billion rupees for the period ending December 31, 2025, compared to 4.15 billion rupees a year earlier. The results from the IN
IN based insurer reflect the dual impact of an Indian government decision to reduce the GST on life insurance products from 18 percent to zero. While this policy change helped drive an 8.8 percent growth in net premium income to 182.42 billion rupees, it also eliminated the company's ability to claim input tax credits, placing pressure on overall profitability.
The company saw management expenses surge by 30 percent to reach 45.33 billion rupees during the quarter. This significant rise was primarily driven by higher employee-related costs and increased operating expenses. Consequently, new business margins for the nine-month period ending December 31 contracted to 24.4 percent from 25.1 percent in the preceding year. The removal of the input tax credit under the zero-rate GST regime served as a primary structural headwind that offset some of the benefits gained from increased demand for insurance products.
