BYD to launch fast charging Denza Z9GT model in Europe

BYD Company Limited has announced plans to launch a new premium electric vehicle in Europe next month featuring ultra-fast charging capabilities that allow the battery to refuel in just minutes. The move is part of an aggressive overseas expansion strategy by the automaker as it faces intensifying competition and shifting market dynamics in China. The upcoming Denza Z9GT model offers a driving range of up to 800 kilometers (497 miles), which places it ahead of most currently available electric models. This launch underscores the technological lead that Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers have established over traditional European rivals. Using advanced flash charging technology, the Denza Z9GT can charge from 10% to 70% in only five minutes. Even in extreme cold, with temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius, the vehicle can reach a 97% charge from 20% in 12 minutes. To support these speeds, the company will begin installing 1,500kW flash chargers across Europe this summer, as existing infrastructure is currently unable to support such high power outputs. This expansion follows a significant year for the brand in Europe, where sales grew by nearly 270% last year. While the company has seen global sales rise from 420,000 units in 2020 to 4.6 million in 2025, becoming the world's fifth-largest automaker, it has recently struggled in its home market. In the first two months of the year, it was overtaken in sales by local competitor Geely. Additionally, the end of purchase tax exemptions for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in its domestic market has helped legacy brands like Volkswagen AG regain market share, with the German automaker returning to the top-selling position in the region this past January.
