Brevard Voters Renew Lagoon Sales Tax

Brevard County voters overwhelmingly approved renewing a half-cent sales tax to fund Indian River Lagoon restoration projects. More than 75 percent of ballots cast favored the measure, which continues funding for muck removal and sewer upgrades over the next decade.

Austin Fox and colleagues at Florida Tech deployed sensors to measure how rotting organic muck from runoff, algal blooms and other sources has been depleting dissolved oxygen along the bottom of the Indian River Lagoon.

Voters in Brevard County approved the renewal of a local half-cent sales tax to protect the Indian River Lagoon, with more than 75% of ballots cast in favor. The measure continues a program that costs residents about $40 a year to fund local environmental restoration. Proponents argue the levy delivers a strong return, generating $24 in regional economic output for every dollar spent.
