South Africa Imposes Steel Tariffs on China and Thailand
South Africa set duties of 74.98 percent for China and 20.32 percent for Thailand. This follows a probe that found material injury to domestic steel producers.
South Africa has imposed significant import duties on structural steel imports from China and Thailand after a trade watchdog investigation confirmed evidence of dumping. The International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC) determined that these products were being sold at prices below normal market value, causing material injury to the domestic market.
According to a government notice, structural steel imports from China now face a tariff rate of 74.98%, while a 20.32% duty applies to similar products from Thailand. These measures follow provisional anti-dumping duties of 52.81% and 9.12% respectively, which were introduced earlier in 2024. The tariffs primarily target structural steel used in the construction industry.
