Indian Steelmakers Grapple With Surge in Chinese Imports
Finished steel exports from China to India reached a two-year high in April as shipments more than doubled to 232,000 metric tons. Local producers are concerned that low-priced products and indirect imports through Vietnam are distorting the market despite existing tariffs on several steel grades.
China finished steel exports to India more than doubled in April to 232,000 metric tons. This surge marks the highest volume in at least two years, despite existing Indian import tariffs. The influx threatens domestic margins as cheap Chinese products undercut local prices by as much as $37 per ton.
### Why Tariffs Failed to Stop the Surge India became a net importer in April as Chinese shipments bypassed trade barriers. While New Delhi imposed duties on certain steel grades in December, stainless steel products remain exempt from these protections.
