PZU, the leading insurance provider in Poland, reported a 12% decline in its fourth-quarter net profit on Thursday, as aggressive competition in the motor insurance market weighed on its mass-market operations. The company's net profit fell to 1.47 billion zlotys, which was largely in line with the 1.46 billion zlotys expected by analysts.

The insurer's shares dropped 5.2% following the news, making it the worst-performing stock on the WIG20 blue-chip index. Lukasz Janczak, an analyst at Erste Group Bank AG, noted that the results reflected a challenging environment for non-life insurance revenue.

Lower non-life insurance revenue could suggest some competitive pressure on pricing.

The result from insurance services decreased 6.6% to 1.14 billion zlotys ($319 million), primarily due to a 5.2% drop in motor insurance sales. Despite maintaining a policy of price increases to protect margins, the insurer has struggled against competitors in a tightening market. Maciej Marcinowski, an analyst at Trigon, expressed concern regarding the ongoing pricing environment.

An intensifying price war does not bode well for the coming quarters.

Earnings in the life insurance segment also saw a decline, attributed to a high base effect from the previous year following one-off assumption updates. Furthermore, net financial income for the core group, excluding its banking interests, saw a 46% year-on-year drop. This decline was driven by unfavorable currency exchange rates, weaker returns on corporate debt, and lower valuations of shares within the medical sector.

The company's banking segment provided a positive offset to the insurance slump. The group holds a 20% stake in BANK PEKAO SA and a 32% stake in ALIOR BANK SA. Profit from the banking segment grew 8.3% to 588 million zlotys, helping to stabilize the group's overall financial performance.
