Polish Insurer PZU Q4 Profit Falls to 1.47 Billion Zlotys
PZU reported a 12 percent drop in fourth-quarter profit to 1.47 billion zlotys as lower financial income weighed. Gains in banking helped offset the decline.
Poland's leading insurer, PZU, reported a 12% decline in fourth-quarter net profit, a result that landed broadly in line with market expectations despite headwinds in its mass insurance and financial investment segments. The state-controlled insurer saw its quarterly net profit reach 1.47 billion zlotys ($412 million), down from 1.68 billion zlotys in the same period a year earlier. This performance closely followed the 1.46 billion zlotys average estimate provided by analysts. PZU's results from insurance services fell by 6.6%, as a downturn in the mass segment, which includes motor insurance, overshadowed gains within its corporate division. Earnings in the life insurance business also retreated, a trend attributed largely to a high base effect from the fourth quarter of 2024 following one-off assumption updates. Net financial income for the core group, excluding its banking operations, plummeted by 46% year-on-year. This sharp drop was driven by unfavorable currency exchange rates, weaker returns on corporate debt, and lower valuations for shares within the medical sector. The overall profit decline was partially offset by a positive contribution from PZU's banking interests. The insurer holds significant stakes in major financial institutions, including a 20% stake in BANK PEKAO SA and a 32% stake in ALIOR BANK SA. In this segment, net profit rose by 8.3% to reach 588 million zlotys during the final quarter of the year.
