Novo Nordisk reduces South African Wegovy prices again
Novo Nordisk reduced prices for its weight-loss drug to compete with Eli Lilly. The lowest dose fell to 1,873 rand as the company targets a larger market share.
The pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk A/S has implemented a second price reduction for its weight-loss medication, Wegovy, in South Africa. This strategic move follows the drug's initial launch in August and aims to address competitive pressures in a market currently led by Eli Lilly and Company.
Executives from the Denmark-based manufacturer noted that the initial pricing was established during a period of regulatory uncertainty. At the time of the launch, reference pricing was affected by ongoing discussions with the United States regarding proposed policies that would link domestic drug costs to those in peer nations. Thabeng Leping, who manages market access and public affairs for the company's local division, explained that the initial costs were not ideal for the regional economy.
