Mumbai Plans Record Municipal Bond Sale
India's richest city plans to launch a debut municipal bond sale to raise up to 95 billion rupees by March. The civic body aims to fund local projects through debt issuance rather than bank loans, joining a growing national trend.

India's richest city will launch its debut bond sale to raise 95 billion rupees ($992 million) in early 2027, two people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday morning. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation plans to issue the debt in one or more tranches, marking the largest local body issuance in the country. The move follows regulatory pushes for corporate transparency and government fiscal incentives aimed at reducing municipal reliance on bank loans.
