Kremlin Says Global Markets Need Russian Oil Exports
The Kremlin says Russian oil volumes are too significant to ignore after the U.S. extended a sanctions waiver. Officials cited the need for market stability.
The Kremlin stated on Monday that the global energy market cannot function effectively without accounting for the significant export volumes provided by Russia. The comment followed a decision by the United States to extend a sanctions waiver, allowing certain Russian oil exports to continue for another month.
The administration of Donald Trump issued the renewal on Friday, permitting countries to purchase sanctioned oil at sea. This extension comes amid domestic political pressure, with some lawmakers suggesting the government has been insufficiently rigorous in its enforcement of sanctions. Despite these tensions, the Kremlin maintains that Russia’s role as the world’s third-largest oil producer and second-largest crude exporter makes its participation essential.
