Italy Births Headed for Record Low
Italy expects birth numbers to drop to a historic low in 2026 as the national demographic crisis continues. Statistics bureau ISTAT reports newborns fell 1.1 percent in the first seven months.

Italy is set to record its lowest number of births since unification in 1861, dropping below last year's total of 355,772 newborns. The decline marks the 17th consecutive year of falling birth rates across the nation. Economists warn the deepening demographic slump threatens long-term public finances and labor force stability.
