Equity markets in India experienced a sharp decline during Thursday's opening session, as escalating geopolitical tensions dampened investor sentiment globally. The KOTAK NIFTY 50 dropped 1.31% to 22,383.40, while the UTI BSE SENSEX ETF fell 1.19% to 72,262.05 by early morning. This downward trend mirrored a broader retreat across Asian markets, which saw average losses of approximately 2% following recent developments in the Middle East.

The sell-off was triggered by statements from the United States regarding the ongoing conflict with Iran. President Donald Trump indicated that American forces would strike targets with significant force in the coming weeks, effectively ending market hopes for a swift de-escalation of the war that has rattled the global economy.

The U.S. would hit Iran extremely hard within weeks.

While the president noted that core strategic objectives were nearing completion, the lack of a clear timeline for the end of hostilities intensified global economic concerns. The uncertainty weighed heavily on domestic sectors, with all 16 major sectoral indices in the red. Financial and banking heavyweights led the decline, each losing 1.6%, while the small-cap and mid-cap segments fell by 1.5% and 1.2%, respectively.

The heightened geopolitical friction also exerted upward pressure on energy costs. Brent Crude Oil surged 5%, trading near $106 per barrel, as traders braced for potential supply disruptions resulting from continued military action in the region.
