Hong Kong Regulator Fines Saxo Capital Markets HK for Unauthorized Virtual Asset Sales
Hong Kong's Securities and Futures Commission fined Saxo Capital Markets HK HK$4 million for selling unauthorized virtual asset products to non-professional investors. This marks the first regulatory fine of its kind in Hong Kong, underscoring the SFC's commitment to overseeing the virtual asset market.
In a landmark enforcement action, the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) of Hong Kong has imposed a HK$4 million fine on Saxo Capital Markets HK (SCMHK) for distributing unauthorized virtual asset products to non-professional investors. This penalty marks the first instance of a licensed financial institution in Hong Kong facing regulatory action for breaches related to virtual asset distribution rules.
The fine, equivalent to approximately $513,663.45 USD, was levied after it was revealed that SCMHK had been involved in the mis-selling of virtual asset funds and related products over a period exceeding four years. These products were sold through the company's online platform, targeting investors who did not meet the criteria for professional status.
