The global aviation industry is facing a significant financial disruption as jet fuel prices have surged from $85 to $90 per barrel to between $150 and $200 per barrel. This sharp increase, driven by the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, has forced airlines to revise their financial outlooks and increase passenger fares. With fuel accounting for up to a quarter of operating expenses, carriers are taking urgent measures to mitigate the impact.

In Greece, AEGEAN AIRLINES expects its first-quarter results to be notably affected by the suspension of Middle East flights and rising fuel costs. Meanwhile, AIRASIA X BHD in Malaysia has cut its flight capacity by 10% and introduced a 20% fuel surcharge across its network.

The United Kingdom carrier EASYJET PLC has warned of rising ticket prices as fuel hedges expire. EasyJet CEO Kenton Jarvis noted:

European consumers should expect higher ticket prices towards the end of summer, when existing fuel hedges come to an end.

AIR FRANCE-KLM has announced plans to increase long-haul ticket prices by 50 euros per round trip. In India, INTERGLOBE AVIATION LTD is introducing fuel charges on domestic and international routes, including a 2,300 rupee charge for flights to Europe. Other Indian carriers, including Air India and Akasa Air, are also adjusting their surcharge structures.

AIR NEW ZEALAND LTD in New Zealand was among the first to raise ticket prices and has since slashed its flight schedule through June while suspending its full-year earnings forecast.

In North America, AMERICAN AIRLINES GROUP INC expects a $400 million increase in first-quarter expenses. JETBLUE AIRWAYS CORP is increasing fees for optional services like checked baggage by up to $9. UNITED AIRLINES HOLDINGS INC is cutting unprofitable flights and raising baggage fees for travel across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. United Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella stated:

United has been able to raise fares without materially hurting bookings in response to the rapid increase in oil and jet fuel prices.

In Hong Kong, CATHAY PACIFIC AIRWAYS has implemented a 34% hike in fuel surcharges. Other regional carriers, such as Greater Bay Airlines and Hong Kong Airlines, are also raising fees, with the latter reporting significant increases for flights to the Maldives, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

CEBU AIR INC in the Philippines and THAI AIRWAYS INTERNATIONAL in Thailand are both reviewing pricing and network strategies, with Thai Airways planning fare increases of up to 15%. In China, CHINA EASTERN AIRLINES CO-H and SPRING AIRLINES CO LTD-A are raising domestic fuel surcharges.

KOREAN AIR LINES CO LTD in South Korea is entering an emergency management mode to improve cost efficiency. In Turkey, SunExpress, a joint venture involving Lufthansa, will impose a temporary fuel surcharge of 10 euros per passenger on Europe-Turkey routes starting in May.

In Vietnam, VIETJET AVIATION JSC and VIETNAM AIRLINES JSC are adjusting flight frequencies and seeking government assistance to remove environmental taxes on fuel. VIRGIN AUSTRALIA HOLDINGS LT in Australia is also adjusting fares to reflect rising cost pressures across the sector.

Global carriers continue to monitor the price of Brent Crude Oil as they navigate this period of extreme volatility. Other airlines, including SAS, WestJet, and Pakistan International Airlines, are also implementing flight cancellations or fare hikes to cope with the surge.
