Euro Zone Consumer Confidence Falls to Lowest Since 2023
Euro zone consumer confidence fell to -16.3 in March as the Iran conflict drove energy prices higher. Analysts expect household spending and GDP growth to slow.
Consumer sentiment across the euro zone has reached its lowest point since late 2023, as a European Commission survey released on Monday highlights the immediate economic fallout from the conflict involving Iran. The sharp decline in confidence serves as early evidence of how geopolitical instability and surging energy prices are beginning to weigh on the broader economy.
The consumer confidence indicator for the euro zone fell to -16.3 this month, a significant drop from the revised -12.3 recorded in February. This result was notably weaker than the -14.4 anticipated by economists in a Reuters poll. Within the wider European Union, the indicator also saw a downturn, sliding to -15.2 from -11.8.
