EU Steel Exports to US Fall 34 Percent After Tariff Hike
European steel exports to the United States fell to 1.94 million metric tons after Washington doubled import duties to 50 percent. Industry association Eurofer urged both sides to implement a trade deal reducing rates to 15 percent to address global overcapacity and derivative product costs.
European Union steel exports to the United States fell 34% after Washington increased import tariffs to 50%. The decline follows a 25% tariff hike a year ago, which has now reduced export volumes to 1.94 million metric tons over the last three quarters. High duties on derivative products like motorbikes and washing machines are further cooling demand for European metals.
### Export Volumes Hit Multi-Year Lows EU producers exported 3.4 million tons to the U.S. in 2025, a drop from 4.1 million tons in 2024. This represents a sharp contraction from the 4.7 million tons recorded in 2017. The industry association Eurofer released these figures on Thursday, highlighting the mounting pressure on European mills.
