EU proposes sanctions on Georgian and Indonesian ports over Russian oil trade

The European Union has proposed a significant expansion of its sanctions regime against Russia RURU, marking the first time the bloc has moved to target port facilities located in third countries. Under the new proposal, which forms part of the EU’s 20th sanctions package, the Kulevi port in Georgia GEGE and the Karimun port in Indonesia IDID would be added to the restricted list for their roles in handling Russian oil. If adopted, the measures would prohibit European companies and individuals from engaging in any transactions with these specific maritime hubs.
The proposal, put forward by the European Commission and the European External Action Service (EEAS), seeks to broaden both the geographic and sectoral reach of existing trade restrictions. This includes a substantial widening of import bans on various commodities. Specifically, the new measures target the metals sector, covering nickel bars, iron ores and concentrates, unrefined and processed copper, and scrap metals including aluminium. Beyond metals, the list of prohibited imports would expand to include salt, ammonia, pebbles, silicon, and furskins.
