Botswana Central Bank Holds Key Rate at 3.5 Percent
The Bank of Botswana kept its policy rate at 3.5% on Thursday to keep inflation within its target range. The economy faces pressure from a slump in diamond exports.
The central bank of Botswana opted to maintain its monetary policy rate at 3.5% during its meeting on Thursday, marking the second consecutive session where the rate remained unchanged. The decision is part of the bank's ongoing strategy to anchor inflation within its medium-term objective range of 3% to 6%. Recent data indicates that price growth in the Southern African nation accelerated to 4.1% year-on-year in January, up from 3.9% in December. The domestic economy remains under significant pressure and is believed to have contracted over the past two years. This downturn is primarily the result of a sustained slump in the global diamond market, which serves as the country's most critical export sector.
