The ongoing crisis involving Iran is acting as a significant economic headwind for Europe, prompting calls for deeper structural reforms within the European Union. Yannis Stournaras, the central bank governor of Greece and a member of the European Central Bank Governing Council, stated that the current geopolitical instability should serve as a catalyst for the bloc to strengthen its collective capacity to withstand external shocks.

Stournaras highlighted that while the EU has debated further integration for years, including the creation of a banking or capital market union, many of these efforts have faced persistent opposition. However, he argued that the rapid succession of global crises has made institutional evolution an urgent priority for European policymakers.

Within a period of a few months, there have been more than one wake-up calls to European policy makers that institutional changes are imperative.

Among the key reforms proposed is the issuance of joint debt to lower borrowing costs and collectively finance large-scale projects. Stournaras suggested that this common funding should be directed toward initiatives that impact all member nations, specifically focusing on security and sustainability.

Our objective should be to issue joint debt to pursue well-defined common European purposes of high importance, such as enhancing defence, green energy, and strategic investment.

By pursuing these reforms, the Greek central bank chief believes the EU can enhance its strategic investment capabilities and ensure a more resilient economic future in the face of persistent global volatility.
