Vietnam disputes US trade findings on forced labor
Vietnam says a U.S. trade report on forced labor fails to reflect its efforts. The response follows a U.S. proposal for tariffs on imports from sixty nations.
Vietnam rejected a United States trade report on Thursday alleging the country failed to curb goods made with forced labor. The dispute follows a Trump Administration proposal to impose tariffs of up to 12.5% on imports from 60 nations. The tension threatens a trade relationship where the U.S. trade deficit with Vietnam reached $54.8 billion in the first three months of the year.
### Hanoi Rejects Forced Labor Findings Foreign ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang stated during a midday Thursday press conference that the U.S. Trade Representative conclusion does not accurately reflect mitigation efforts. Hang noted that national policy strictly prohibits forced labor and complies with International Labour Organization regulations. The rejection comes after the U.S. identified dozens of trading partners as failing to stop the trade of illicitly produced goods.
