Spain gas imports rise 20 percent with US as top supplier
Total gas imports to Spain rose nearly 20 percent in February as the United States provided 33.8 percent of the supply. Russian imports fell by 52 percent.
Spain recorded a nearly 20% increase in natural gas imports this February compared to the previous year, with the United States emerging as the dominant supplier. According to data from the national grid operator Enagás, S.A., the country imported a total of 31,422 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of gas, up from 26,318 GWh in February 2025. The United States provided 10,612 GWh of the total, representing 33.8% of the market. This rise in transatlantic supply comes as European nations continue to pivot away from Eastern European energy sources. In this evolving market, firms such as Natural Gas Services Group, Inc. remain part of a global industry infrastructure supporting the shift toward diversified LNG procurement. Algeria, traditionally the primary source of gas for the Spanish market via pipeline, was the second-largest supplier during the month. It provided 9,151 GWh, representing approximately 29% of the total volume. In contrast, imports from Russia saw a significant decline, dropping roughly 52% in absolute terms from the prior year to account for just 14.6% of the total supply. This trend underscores the region's broader effort to reduce reliance on Russian energy following the invasion of Ukraine.
