US jet fuel exports to Europe hit record highs in April

Europe is importing record levels of US jet fuel to replace Middle Eastern supplies. Inflows reached 200,000 barrels per day as regional stocks hit low levels.

Europe is currently receiving record-breaking volumes of jet fuel from the United States as the region attempts to stabilize its energy supplies following significant disruptions in the Middle East. Data from Kpler and LSEG indicate that April inflows are projected to reach between 149,000 and 200,000 barrels per day, a historic high for the continent. This surge comes as the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, triggered by the conflict involving Israel and Iran, has cut off traditional supply routes. Historically, Europe has relied on the Middle East for nearly 75% of its jet fuel imports, or approximately 375,000 barrels per day.

The logistical shift is occurring against a backdrop of broader energy market volatility, where benchmarks such as Brent Crude Oil and West Texas Oil remain under close observation. However, the immediate concern for European regulators is the dwindling inventory of refined products. Independent stocks of jet fuel at the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) hub reached their lowest levels since March 2023 last week. While Spain remains a net exporter of the fuel, the United Kingdom—the region's largest consumer—must import 65% of its total demand to maintain operations.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned that if European markets cannot secure more than half of the volumes lost from the Middle East, stockpiles could drop to a critical 23-day level by June, potentially triggering physical shortages. In response to the tightening supply, the American energy sector has ramped up production for export. In the week ending April 3, the country exported an estimated 442,000 barrels of jet fuel globally, more than double the previous year's average. This redirected flow is largely driven by higher prices in regions facing acute shortages.

As the crisis deepens, industry stakeholders are calling for government intervention to prevent a total collapse of regional aviation logistics. According to a document detailing the industry's concerns:

"European airlines to urge the European Union to step in with emergency measures, including widespread airspace closures."

Although EU nations are required to maintain 90 days of emergency oil reserves, current regulations do not specify the exact proportion of jet fuel required within those stocks, leaving the aviation sector vulnerable to the current supply chain shock.
