Major US Banks Report Double Digit Commercial Loan Growth
Major US banks reported double-digit growth in commercial lending last week as businesses seek capital. Consumer borrowing remains stable but grows at a slower pace.
Major financial institutions in the United States reported a significant surge in corporate borrowing last week, providing an early sign of economic durability despite persistent inflation and fears of a potential downturn. This robust growth in commercial lending suggests that businesses are continuing to seek working capital even as policy uncertainty and shifts in the labor market create a more cautious spending environment. Additionally, an energy-driven inflation shock linked to the conflict in Iran has complicated the outlook for interest rates, which had previously undergone a series of reductions. Michael Dehal, a senior portfolio manager at RAYMOND JAMES FINANCIAL INC, suggested that some firms might be accelerating their borrowing to secure lower rates before potential future hikes.
"Companies could be front-running a possible rate hike to lock in cheaper financing, as the Federal Reserve may be forced to raise interest rates to tackle war-driven inflation."
