Umicore profit beats expectations on gold sales while core business struggles
Umicore beat profit targets today after selling gold inventories. Shares fell as investors focused on weak demand in the core electric vehicle battery unit.
Insights:
USCF Midstream Energy Income Fund reported an adjusted EBITDA of €847 million for 2025, surpassing the analysts' forecast of €838 million. This headline figure was heavily influenced by Umicore's previously announced and now completed sale of gold inventories, which contributed €486 million to the total. Because the gold sale accounted for more than half of the reported adjusted EBITDA, the quality of the earnings beat has been questioned, as the company's underlying business performance remained muted.
The windfall from the sale of gold inventories occurred alongside a roughly 60% rise in gold prices in 2025, which significantly boosted the value of the transaction. Despite this contribution, the company, which is headquartered in Belgium
BE, faced a challenging environment in its core segments. Both the battery cathode materials unit and the catalytic converters business were affected by demand and structural pressures.
