The main stock index in Canada reached a six-week high on Wednesday as investors found reasons for optimism regarding geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Market sentiment improved following statements from United States President Donald Trump, who indicated that the conflict involving Israel and Iran was nearing an end. This was further supported by the arrival of the army chief from Pakistan in Tehran, aimed at mediating and preventing a resurgence of hostilities. Brian Madden, chief investment officer at First Avenue Investment Counsel, noted that while geopolitical shifts are driving the market, the heavy presence of energy stocks in the Canadian index is tempering the rally.

Markets are taking their cues from developments around Iran ... but Canadas oil-heavy exposure means softer crude prices are limiting how far the rebound can go.

The technology sector was the day's top performer, climbing 3.6%, largely driven by an 8.1% jump in shares of SHOPIFY INC - CLASS A. Financials, which hold significant weight in the index, also contributed to the gains with a 0.9% increase.

Conversely, the energy sector declined 0.5% as West Texas Oil settled at $91.29 per barrel, trading significantly below its recent highs. The materials sector, which includes mining companies, fell 1.8% as the price of Gold dropped. Additionally, BRP INC/CA- SUB VOTING saw its stock price tumble 35.4% after the company suspended its financial guidance in response to updated American sectoral tariffs, leading to a 2% drop in the consumer discretionary sector.
