Trump Administration Opens Trade Probes Into 16 Nations
The US launched trade probes into 16 partners on Wednesday to restore tariffs struck down by the Supreme Court. Officials cite unfair practices and surpluses.
The United States government has announced the initiation of unfair trade practice investigations into 16 major trading partners. This move, part of an effort by the administration of President Donald Trump, seeks to restore tariffs that were recently struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court. These investigations are being conducted under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which provides the U.S. Trade Representative with the authority to impose tariffs or other retaliatory measures against trading partners found to be using unfair trade practices. The administration alleges that these 16 partners utilize policies that disadvantage American goods producers, noting that 15 of them maintain significant goods trade surpluses with the U.S.
