President Trump hikes global import tariffs to fifteen percent after Supreme Court ruling
President Trump raised global import tariffs to fifteen percent today following a Supreme Court defeat. Global leaders warned of trade disruptions and legal risks.
President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States
US will increase a temporary tariff on all imports to 15 percent, up from the previous 10 percent. This policy shift follows a significant U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down a large swath of the administration's existing tariffs, prompting the Office of the U.S. President to seek an alternative legal framework for its trade agenda.
The new 15 percent levies are grounded in Section 122, a provision of U.S. law that is currently described as an untested legal authority. By invoking this specific statute, the administration aims to establish a different legal basis for its import policies than the measures recently invalidated by the high court. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, which involves Jamieson Greer, is central to the implementation of these revised trade actions.
