STOXX 600 Gains 1.6 Percent as Strait of Hormuz Reopens
The STOXX 600 rose 1.6% on Friday after Iran reopened the Strait of Hormuz to commercial traffic. Oil prices fell 11% as travel and luxury shares led the rally.
European stock markets rallied significantly on Friday after Iran announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global energy shipments. The pan-European STOXX 600 index surged 1.6% to 626.58 points, marking its fourth consecutive weekly gain and returning to levels seen prior to the recent conflict. The easing of tensions follows a truce in Lebanon, which has allowed for the resumption of commercial maritime traffic through the waterway.
Global markets responded positively to the news, with major indexes in the United States trading near record highs. In contrast, energy markets experienced a sharp correction as Brent Crude Oil prices tumbled by as much as 11%. European government bond yields also declined as investors reduced expectations for future interest rate hikes by the European Central Bank. European equities have underperformed peers in the United States over the course of the conflict, reflecting the region's high dependence on external energy supplies and intensifying inflation worries.
