Prime Minister Kim Min-seok of South Korea held a meeting with United States President Donald Trump in Washington on Friday, following the legislative approval of a major investment initiative. The meeting took place one day after the South Korean parliament passed a special bill enabling the implementation of a $350 billion investment pledge in the American market.

The diplomatic encounter follows a period of heightened trade pressure from the Trump administration. In late January, Trump had threatened to impose 25% tariffs on South Korean exports, arguing that the country's legislature had failed to enact a trade framework previously agreed upon by Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. That framework, finalized during an October summit, had capped U.S. levies at 15%.

Prior to the Friday session, Kim met with Vice President JD Vance to discuss the progress of the bilateral agreement. Kim's office noted that the Prime Minister conveyed the government's firm resolve to fulfill the investment terms established by the two nations' leaders.

Vance welcomed the bills passage, saying it established the legal conditions needed to implement the investment deal, and called for continued close communication between the governments on the issue.

While economic ties are being reinforced, the military landscape is seeing significant shifts. Reports suggest that U.S. missile defense batteries are being moved from Osan Air Base in South Korea for potential redeployment to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates due to regional instability in the Middle East.

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun confirmed that discussions regarding the redeployment of Patriot missile systems are ongoing between the two militaries. Despite the movement of these assets, President Lee emphasized this week that the South Korean military maintains the strength to deter any potential aggression from North Korea.
