South Africa Proposes Major Exchange Control Overhaul
The National Treasury is modernizing decades-old capital flow rules to attract billions in investment. New measures include regulating crypto assets and allowing local firms to manage non-rand funds.
South Africa has unveiled a comprehensive proposal to modernize its decades-old exchange control regulations, a move aimed at transforming the nation into a premier financial gateway for the continent. The National Treasury's draft circular, released for public comment, outlines a shift from restrictive capital management to a more liberalized framework designed to attract significant foreign investment. Estimates from the local stock exchange suggest these reforms could unlock upwards of 10 trillion rand (approximately $608 billion) in capital over time.
