Shippers Seek Clarity on Hormuz Transit Following Ceasefire
Global shippers await clarity on Hormuz transit rules as Iran warns that permits are still required. Major firms remain cautious despite the recent ceasefire agreement.
Global shipping operators are seeking further clarification on the specific conditions of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran before they resume regular traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway, which serves as a vital conduit for approximately 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas, saw traffic nearly halt during a six-week conflict that significantly impacted global energy markets.
While Tehran has indicated it will provide safe passage in coordination with its military forces, coastguards warned on Wednesday that any vessel attempting to navigate the strait without explicit permission would be targeted. A radio message received by ship owners in Singapore and Norway emphasized that the waterway remains restricted.
