Poland leads push for EU to maintain free carbon permits
Prime Minister Donald Tusk and five other nations are urging the EU to maintain free carbon permits for industry. They seek tailored policies to curb costs.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced that his government is leading a coalition of European Union member states to demand the continued issuance of free carbon permits. The move is intended to shield industrial sectors from rising energy costs as the bloc navigates significant economic and geopolitical challenges.
Speaking at an energy conference, Tusk confirmed that Poland has joined forces with Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Italy, and Slovakia to petition the European Commission. The group sent a formal letter demanding that industry continue to receive free carbon allowances, which serve to limit the financial burden of emissions compliance.
