Panama Canal says high auction fee reflects market shifts

The Panama Canal Authority says a high auction fee reflects market shifts as traffic rises. Officials report increased transit demand due to global trade changes.

The Panama Canal Authority has clarified that a recent report of a $4 million auction payment by a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vessel to bypass the transit queue was a result of temporary market dynamics rather than a standard fee structure. The statement comes as geopolitical tensions, specifically the conflict involving Iran, continue to reshape global trade routes and increase pressure on the waterway.

According to the authority, auction prices are influenced by various factors, including customer urgency, commercial priorities, freight rates, and bunker prices. These auctions serve as a mechanism for shippers seeking last-minute certainty in their transit schedules. The surge in demand follows a Bloomberg News report detailing the high cost of securing faster passage amid worsening congestion. The canal has seen a shift in trade flows, with increased shipments originating from the United States destined for Asia as buyers seek alternatives to disrupted routes.

Despite the volatility, the authority maintains that operations remain reliable. Data for the first half of fiscal 2026 shows a 3.7% increase in oceangoing vessel transits, totaling 6,288. Daily averages reached 34 vessels in January and 37 in March, with peak periods exceeding 40 transits. As of Thursday, 102 vessels held reservations, while 25 were waiting without pre-booked slots. The authority also noted that reported wait times can sometimes be inflated by vessels arriving well before their scheduled reservation windows.
