Norinchukin Bank reports 22 billion yen Q4 net profit
The bank earned 22 billion yen in the final quarter, marking its fourth straight profit. It is rebuilding finances after heavy losses on foreign bond holdings.
Norinchukin Bank returned to profitability in the January-March quarter, posting a net profit of 22 billion yen ($138.32 million). The result marks a recovery from a 393 billion yen loss during the same period a year earlier. For investors, the fourth consecutive profitable quarter signals the bank is rebuilding its finances after heavy losses on foreign sovereign bonds.
### Rebuilding After Sovereign Bond Losses The primary financial institution for agriculture and forestry cooperatives in Japan reported a full-year net profit of 121 billion yen. This follows a 1.81 trillion yen loss in the year ending March 2025, when the bank sold off government bonds that lost value as interest rates rose. Norinchukin generates returns from securities investments rather than traditional lending, making its portfolio sensitivity higher than its peers.
