Nexperia China begins producing chips using 12-inch wafers
Nexperia China has started producing chips using 12-inch wafers. The move follows a dispute with its Dutch parent that has disrupted automotive supply lines.
The Chinese subsidiary of chipmaker Nexperia has officially begun producing its own semiconductors, signaling a deeper rift and a move toward independence from its European parent company. This development follows a series of disputes that have impacted automotive supply chains and strained relations between the firm's global branches. In a statement released on social media, the subsidiary in China confirmed it has started manufacturing several types of chips using 12-inch wafers, a technology that the company's facilities in the Netherlands are currently unable to produce.
The move highlights a growing divide that began in October 2025 after the Dutch government intervened to block the company from moving its operations. This intervention disrupted the established workflow where wafers were produced in Europe and then sent to China for final packaging. Since then, the Chinese arm has declared independence, while the European headquarters halted wafer shipments, citing issues with nonpayment.
