Mercedes Investors Question Luxury Strategy in China
Investors warned Mercedes that a luxury focus may hinder its China recovery. Sales fell 27 percent in early 2026 as local tech-driven brands gain ground.
Investors at the annual meeting of MERCEDES-BENZ GROUP AG expressed concern over the company's luxury-first strategy in China, suggesting it may be out of step with a market increasingly dominated by high-tech local competitors. While German automakers traditionally dominated the premium segment, the rise of domestic players such as BYD CO LTD -A, NIO INC-CLASS A, and LI AUTO INC-CLASS A has shifted the landscape. These companies are gaining market share by offering advanced technology at lower price points than traditional European rivals like BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AG and Audi.
At the meeting in Germany, Moritz Kronenberger of Union Investment highlighted the risk of relying on legacy prestige rather than rapid technological advancement.
