Libya Zawiya refinery shuts down after nearby clashes
Libya's Zawiya refinery declared an emergency and halted operations after heavy shelling struck the site. The operator evacuated tankers as clashes intensified.
Libya declared an emergency at the 120,000 barrel-per-day Zawiya refinery after heavy shelling forced a total plant shutdown on May 8. Zawiya is the largest functioning refinery in the country and connects directly to the 300,000 bpd Sharara oilfield. The closure disrupts crude processing and raises questions about fuel supply stability.
### Shelling Forces Total Evacuation Azzawiya Oil Refining Company shut the plant and evacuated all tankers from the port after projectiles struck multiple locations inside the complex. Two engineers told Reuters the clashes erupted near Zawiya during the morning on Friday. The National Oil Corporation (NOC) confirmed several heavy-calibre projectiles landed within the oil complex but reported no significant damage to infrastructure so far.
