Japanese convenience store customer numbers fell 3.8% in September from a year earlier, marking 15 consecutive months of declines amid rising living costs. Underlying inflation in Japan exceeded the central bank's 2% target, pushing shoppers toward discount supermarkets. The shift threatens private consumption, which accounts for about half of the nation's GDP, according to Mizuho Research Institute analyst Ryohei Ikeda.
