Japan Real Wages Rise 1.9 Percent in April
Japanese real wages climbed 1.9 percent in April marking a fourth straight monthly gain as higher special payments and easing inflation improved purchasing power. Household spending fell 0.5 percent year-on-year which was a smaller decline than expected by market analysts.
Japan real wages rose 1.9% in April, marking a fourth consecutive monthly gain as higher bonus payments strengthened household purchasing power. The result represents the first time in over 34 years that nominal wage growth exceeded 3% for three straight months. Sustained wage pressure provides Japan with the necessary justification to consider further interest rate hikes this month.
### Bonus Payments Drive Earnings Growth Total cash earnings climbed 3.5% year-on-year to 312,425 yen, the fastest acceleration since December 2024. This growth was fueled by special payments, primarily one-time bonuses, which jumped 7.4% in April. A labor ministry official noted that steady nominal wage growth and easing inflation have combined to lift the purchasing power of Japanese workers.
