Indonesia is exploring the possibility of reviving its plan to implement a mandatory B50 biodiesel blend as early as the middle of this year. This potential shift comes in response to a significant spike in global energy costs driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The government is closely monitoring the market as Brent Crude Oil prices surged past $100 per barrel on Monday. While the authorities had previously sidelined the B50 initiative in January due to technical challenges and funding concerns, the current geopolitical climate involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has prompted a strategic reassessment.

Deputy Energy Minister Yuliot Tanjung indicated that the administration is weighing multiple scenarios to mitigate the impact of rising imports, noting that the mandate could be accelerated if conditions persist.

Despite the potential for an accelerated timeline, the current mandate for a B40 blend—consisting of 40% palm oil-based fuel—remains the official policy through the end of 2026. The steering committee, led by Chief Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto, continues to evaluate real-time price movements before making a final determination. Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia suggested that the government could accelerate various biofuel programs, including the introduction of bioethanol blends for gasoline, to reduce reliance on expensive fossil fuel imports.

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa noted that the nation is prepared to adjust its fiscal strategy to protect the economy from external shocks.

Indonesia is prepared to raise the allocation for fuel subsidies to absorb the shock from rising global oil prices.

The potential shift to B50 is expected to impact global palm oil markets, as higher domestic consumption in Southeast Asia typically limits the supply available for international exports.
