India prioritizes gas supplies for households and transport
India invoked emergency measures to divert gas supplies following disruptions in the Middle East. Priority is given to households as industrial users face cuts.
India has invoked emergency measures to divert natural gas supplies from non-priority sectors to key users following the disruption of liquefied natural gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. The decision follows a government notification issued on Monday, highlighting the impact of regional instability and the declaration of force majeure by Qatar. The country currently meets half of its 195 million standard cubic metres per day (mmscmd) gas consumption through international imports.
Prior to the closure of the strategic waterway, the domestic market received approximately 60 mmscmd of gas from Middle Eastern suppliers. Under the new emergency protocols, the government will supply fuel in proportion to the average use over the last six months by priority sectors. This reallocation strategy aims to stabilize the energy market, which affects various stakeholders including infrastructure providers like Natural Gas Services Group, Inc..
