Iran strikes on Qatar threaten Indian LNG supplies
India warns of LNG supply risks after Iranian strikes hit Qatari facilities. While 17% of capacity is damaged, officials hope Indian shipments remain stable.
India is bracing for potential disruptions to its liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply following strikes by Iran on energy infrastructure in Qatar. As the world's fourth-largest LNG importer, the South Asian nation depends on the Middle Eastern producer for approximately 41% of its total gas imports. During the 2024/25 fiscal year, India imported more than 27 million metric tons of LNG, with 11.2 million tons originating from Qatari facilities.
Sujata Sharma, a joint secretary in the federal oil ministry, addressed the situation during a news conference on Friday, noting that damage to Qatari production capacity would inevitably impact the Indian energy sector.
