IMF Warns Africa Faces Rising Inflation Risk
The IMF upgraded Sub Saharan Africa growth to 4.5 percent for 2026 but warned that rising inflation and higher borrowing costs threaten economic stability. Regional median inflation is projected to climb while climate shocks and debt burdens add to strains.

Sub-Saharan Africa's median inflation will accelerate to 5.0% by 2027 while regional growth holds at 4.5%, the IMF said during the morning briefing on October 15. The updated outlook reverses earlier projections that price pressures would peak at 5.0% in 2026 before easing. The worsening inflation outlook threatens hard-won economic gains across the continent as borrowing costs climb and external buffers fray.
