Greenhouse Gas Levels Reach Record Highs in 2025

Atmospheric greenhouse gas levels reached record highs in 2025 with carbon dioxide hitting 426 parts per million. The UN weather agency warns that a powerful El Nino could push concentrations even higher this year.

Atmospheric greenhouse gases reached record highs in 2025, with carbon dioxide averaging 426.8 parts per million, the World Meteorological Organization said Tuesday. The concentration rose 2.8 ppm from the previous year, surpassing the decade's average annual increase. Every additional part per million traps more heat, supercharging oceans and atmosphere.
