Global Temperatures Set for Near Record Highs by 2030
A report from the U.N. weather agency and the UK Met Office predicts global temperatures will likely exceed the 1.5C warming threshold at least once by 2030. Arctic regions are expected to warm significantly faster than the global average while a strong El Nino event may drive further record heat.
The U.N. weather agency and the United Kingdom Met Office forecast global temperatures will reach near-record levels through 2030. Annual global mean temperatures are expected to range between 1.3°C and 1.9°C above pre-industrial levels. This trend threatens the 1.5°C threshold established by the Paris Agreement to prevent severe climate events.
### Breach of 1.5C Threshold Likely The annual report released midday May 28 indicates a high probability that global temperatures will temporarily exceed 1.5°C above the 1850-1900 average for at least one year before 2031. Researchers also predict that one year in this five-year window will surpass 2024 as the warmest on record.
