Ghana cocoa farmers face hunger as price mismatch halts international sales

Unpaid Ghanaian cocoa farmers are skipping meals as global price drops halt exports. The state regulator owes for thousands of tons of delivered beans.

International traders have largely stopped purchasing cocoa from Ghana GHGH after global prices for the commodity fell sharply, creating a significant mismatch between the country's fixed farmgate price and prevailing market rates. This market-driven shift has left the Ghana Cocoa Board (Cocobod) with large unsold inventories at ports and has resulted in many farmers across the nation remaining unpaid for their harvests. Licensed Buying Companies are currently struggling to manage the backlog as the purchasing process has become loss-making relative to the fixed domestic price.
